Tubal Reversal

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns

The decision to tie your tubes earlier to prevent pregnancy may now have you questioning if it was the right decision after all. The physicians at Fertility Answers can help. The microsurgical technique of tubal reversal surgery is a quick out-patient procedure that will give you the chance to conceive naturally again.

Tubal reversal is a highly successful treatment for couples who want to have a baby after having tubal ligation surgery, commonly known as having your “tubes tied.” Tubal reversal microsurgery repairs the fallopian tube after a tubal ligation procedure. Many clinics offer only one option for couples desiring another baby after tubal ligation – either tubal reversal or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

At Fertility Answers, we offer both tubal reversal and in vitro fertilization options to help couples achieve their dream of a pregnancy.

We will examine your history, operative report(s), laboratory evaluation of egg quality. After thorough review, we will help you determine which option is best for you. Few physicians are able to offer such an individualized approach.

Tubal reversal surgery involves microsurgical techniques to open and reconnect the fallopian tube segments that remain after a tubal ligation procedure. Usually there are two remaining fallopian tube segments – the proximal tubal segment that emerges from the uterus and the distal tubal segment that ends with the fimbria next to the ovary. The type of microsurgical technique used to repair the fallopian tubes depends on how much of the tube segments are left. The two most commonly used methods to repair tubes are Microsurgical Tubal Anastomosis and Microsurgical Tubal Implantation. There are some physicians who still recommend tubal repair after a fimbriectomy, but because of the very high rate of ectopic pregnancies, IVF is most often recommended for these patients.

Tubal reversal surgery is performed at an out-patient facility. Patients are typically discharged from the facility within several hours after the surgery and can expect to resume normal activities within 5 to 10 days. Some patients will stay in the hospital overnight.

Pregnancy rates after tubal ligation reversal can be extremely high depending on the age of the wife and type of tubal ligation. One way to determine whether tubal reversal surgery is the best option for you is through an interpretation of the operative report from your tubal ligation. With this information, our physicians are able to provide feedback on the type of sterilization that was performed and the amount of tube that may be remaining after the reversal. We will provide you with a Medical Records Release Form to assist you with obtaining your report from the surgeon who performed your tubal ligation.

At Fertility Answers, our experienced team of physicians and embryology staff combined with the use of the most advanced laboratory technologies has resulted in high pregnancy success rates of around 50 percent following In Vitro Fertilization for women under 35 years of age.

Being able to weigh both your options for pregnancy, tubal reversal versus In Vitro Fertilization, is a benefit of entrusting your care to our physicians.
