To ensure overall success, it’s important to know the correct procedures for storing your fertility medications
Great news! Your fertility medication shipment is about to arrive! This box from your fertility pharmacy contains some very precious cargo most of which must be treated with care. Now is a great time to go over our tips for properly organizing and storing your fertility medications.
The success of your cycle rests in large part on the proper storage of your fertility medications. There are a lot of sensitive medications that will come in this box, and improper storage can reduce the effectiveness of certain medications which can, in turn, affect the success of your fertility treatment. And because these medications are costly, improper storage can add to the overall cost of your infertility journey. So, pay close attention to the instructions from your fertility pharmacy and your Fertility Answers team on properly storing your fertility medications.
Staying organized decreases stress during your cycle
Good organization is key to minimizing stress during your medicated cycle. One area that is really important to be organized is with your medications. Before your package arrives, decide where you will be storing your fertility medications. You will be surprised at the volume of different medicines, vials, syringes and medical supplies in your shipment. Because of that, it can be helpful to dedicate a space for all your medications and supplies. This could be on a bathroom or kitchen counter or a table. Also, because many of your meds will need to be refrigerated, clearing out a dedicated space in the refrigerator can be very helpful, too.
When your package arrives, first catalog what is in there and check to make sure everything is there. Then, read the specific instructions for each medication, maybe even creating a chart to write notes for each one. Keep all medications and supplies in their original containers to protect them from light and to make sure you know what it is. If you have children or pets, use a medicine safe to prevent accidental ingestion.
Know the right temperature each fertility medication needs
Temperature is important for many of your fertility medications. Proper storage helps preserve the medications, safeguarding the investment you made in purchasing them
Some medications, like Follistim and Gonal-f, need to be refrigerated between 38–42°F. Use a thermometer in your refrigerator to make sure it is cooling to the correct temperature. Other medications can be stored at room temperature. Store these medications in a dry, dark place to prevent degradation. Never allow medications to be in direct sunlight or leave them in a hot car.
Plan ahead if you will be traveling
If you will be traveling during your medicated cycle, plan ahead by determining which medications you will need and what environment they need to be kept in. When packing them, keep medications in their original packaging. For those that need to be kept refrigerated, consider carrying them with you in a temperature-controlled container. These specialized containers, usually marketed as insulin coolers, can be found online with a quick internet search. As a last resort, use a small, insulated bag with an ice pack to keep your medications cool. And always pack medications in a carry-on, not in checked luggage, so that they are always with you.
If traveling by air, contact your airline ahead of time to learn about their protocols for storing and transporting medications. Also, be prepared to provide a doctor’s note when going through TSA screening. We are happy to provide this given that we have enough time to make it happen.
