Gift of Hope 2006

Gift of Hope - Hope Elizabeth HughesCongratulations to Laura and Terry Hughes of Lafayette, now the proud parents of Hope Elizabeth Hughes, our first Gift of Hope baby! Hope Elizabeth was born on April 14th, 2007, at Women's & Children's Hospital in Lafayette. Hope weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces.

The Hughes were chosen from over 40 applications received from Acadiana-area couples who applied for the Gift of Hope 2006. Applications were reviewed by an independent committee who selected the Hughes based upon their financial and medical needs and personal situation. The Hughes have been trying to conceive a child for over five years but their efforts were stalled due to the high cost of in vitro fertilization, their next step in infertility care, a procedure their health insurance does not cover. Depending on individual circumstances, IVF typically costs between $10,000 to $15,000 per cycle.

Disappointed by two ectopic pregnancies that ended in terminations and destroyed Laura’s fallopian tubes, IVF was the Hughes’ last hope for conceiving a child of their own.

Sponsored by Fertility & Women’s Health Center of Louisiana, Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Sheridan Healthcare™, GIFT of HOPE seeks to ease the high costs, both financially and emotionally, of infertility treatments for one couple who demonstrates both financial and medical needs for IVF. According to Resolve, the National Infertility Association, only a quarter of healthcare insurers offer coverage for infertility care. As a result, as many as 50 percent of American couples who fail to conceive do not seek treatment due to financial reasons. In Louisiana, most insurance plans do not provide coverage for infertility treatments.

GIFT of HOPE has secured donated services to provide Laura and Terry the chance of pregnancy through in vitro fertilization. Donors include John Storment, M.D., a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist with Fertility & Women’s Health Center of Louisiana; the Assisted Reproductive Technologies Center at Womens & Children’s Hospital in Lafayette, LA; and anesthesia services from Sheridan Healthcare™.
